Although he was not a musician he became one of the leaders of the Memphis Music Industry and before he came to American as General Manager for Chips he was with Elvis as his right hand man for years and when he left Elvis he discovered Rita Coolidge who he recorded at American and became completely sold on the creativeness and innovativeness of Chips and the American rhythm section. He did a number of things for Chips and the musicians while spending his two years there and was one of their biggest supporters and cheerleaders. He has continued to be that to this day and has staunchly campaigned for them to be recognized by the Grammys and the Rock N' Roll Hall Of fame that they richly deserve. I know he also contributed to Roben Jones book also.Tony Wilson, Elvis and Marty Lacker Fannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26763832.post-56274244248208504142011-02-03T19:44:51.301-05:002011-02-03T19:44:51.301-05:00Thanks for your note Bostig. Every once in a while I listen to their greatest hits CD. Among my favorites are of course "The Letter" and "Cry Like A Baby" but I also really like "Fields Of Clover." I always liked how in "Cry Like A Baby" they lifted a few lines from Hank Williams' "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still In Love With You)."ElvisFan#1noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26763832.post-68678048090029488112010-03-15T14:04:11.004-04:002010-03-15T14:04:11.004-04:00You are correct. Although I did notice what I thought to be one mistake off-hand. At one point when talking about the sessions with Elvis, she says something about a song Elvis recorded titled "Clean Up Your Own Backyard" and references it as being recorded after the American sessions with Elvis when in fact it was recorded prior to those sessions. It was released as the next single after "In The Ghetto."ElvisFan#1noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26763832.post-61032400894084320422010-02-28T13:20:37.351-05:002010-02-28T13:20:37.351-05:00Yes, I do agree that alot of the rare stuff needs ...Yes, I do agree that alot of the rare stuff needs to be out there too. But it would be nice to compile a box set of what Chips thought was the best tracks. Sony Legacy has done a boxset on the Philadelphia International label and Shout Factory has done a box set on Vee-Jay. Now granted, American was a studio, not a record label. That doesn't mean a boxset couldn't be done. It would take some work as far as licensing but it could be done. Shout Factory has done boxsets of artists from different labels. BMG did a CD a few years ago titled "Memphis Celebrates 50 Years of Rock and Roll" which featured "Suspicious Minds" by Elvis, "Son Of A Preacher Man" by Dusty Springfield and "The Dark End Of The Street" by James Carr, "The Letter" by the Box Tops along with some Sun and Stax material.ElvisFan#1noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26763832.post-39772983604587824242010-02-27T23:08:43.467-05:002010-02-27T23:08:43.467-05:00The majority of Memphis Boys stuff is out there on...The majority of Memphis Boys stuff is out there on various Cds,for instance all the Aretha, Wilson Pickett, Elvis, etc. What's missing from Cd reissues is the stuff from their own AGP,Trump, Chips, and Entrance labels. That's what needs to be compiled.

This was mostly experimental stuff, distributed by larger labels. Bell had the AGP material,Capitol sponsored the Chips and Trump labels, and Columbia handled all the material on Entrance. So compiling it would undoubtedly be, as one person phrased it, ''a licensing nightmare.''MizzGrizznoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26763832.post-57716426730550868792010-02-27T22:28:21.410-05:002010-02-27T22:28:21.410-05:00Hello,

Roben ought to try to get Sony Legacy, Rhino, Shout Factory or Hippo-Select or one of those type of record labels to put together a boxset of the best material that was recorded at American.ElvisFan#1noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26763832.post-14776175783571660032010-02-27T13:41:36.198-05:002010-02-27T13:41:36.198-05:00I emailed Roben re the status of her book and she ...I emailed Roben re the status of her book and she replied as follows:

Dear Allen, I was going to write you this weekend and let you know. I admired her way of weaving seemingly unconnected events together to complete the circle. She was absolutely correct about this producers and musicians doing it to make the best music possible. A little known example was that "You Were Always On My Mind" was written and cut in Memphis on three separate singers before Willie recorded it. So was "Suspicious Minds" before Elvis cut it (Mark James, Ronnie Milsap, and BJ Thomas). These Memphis guys would never give up on a good song.Glen Spreennoreply@blogger.com
